The Australian GP is back on the calendar and underway in 2022. The race missed out in the last 2 years due to the pandemic. Its return also marks the homecoming of Daniel Ricciardo, this time with a new team in the form of McLaren.

However, the streets of Melbourne have not always been kind to Ricciardo. He is yet to register a win or a podium in his home race.

Daniel Ricciardo and his unfortunate record at Albert Park

Daniel Ricciardo is the only Australian driver on the grid and Melbourne, being his home race, has been the season opener for the majority of the last decade. However, he has never fared exceptionally well through the streets of Melbourne.

Ricciardo’s best finish in the Australian GP is only a P4, which he got in 2016 and 2018 with Red Bull. Moreover, the last 8 GPs in Australia have seen him not finishing the race 4 times. This year he will be hoping to pick up some points to open his tally for the season.

Ricciardo has managed to qualify P7 for this year’s race. He will be hoping lady luck sides with him for a good showing in front of his home fans today.

Saturday Qualifying Results in Australia

The grid is all set for the Australian GP today. However, it was not all smooth sailing in the session with Nicholas Latifi and Lance Stroll having a crash in Q1, which brought out the red flags. Qualifying was an exciting affair that saw Charles Leclerc secure pole.

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez rounded out the top 3. Qualifying also saw a strong performance by McLaren. Lando Norris was P4 while homeboy Daniel Ricciardo will start P7 in tomorrow’s race. Mercedes also enjoyed a good qualifying with Lewis Hamilton P5 and Russell P6. The scene is all set for lights out tomorrow on the roads of Melbourne.
