The restart to life in F1 after the summer break has not been the best for McLaren. The Woking outfit went into the break on a high but has failed to continue the form since the restart for various reasons. McLaren had a worse outing in Monza compared to the Dutch GP, which even showcased a never-seen-before side of Lando Norris with his public outburst. In Monza, despite low expectations, the team expected both their cars to finish in the points. This is why Oscar Piastri‘s P12 was below expectations and McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella is blaming Norris for it.

Piastri put up a mega effort in the Italian GP qualifying and secured himself a P7 starting position on the grid. However, because of his contact with Norris & later Hamilton, the Australian fell down the grid and finished in P12. Not just Piastri, looking to exact revenge now, even Stella is blaming Norris for this outcome.

“We could have scored another two points while we are out with one car. Our goal is to score points with both cars. To be honest we are surprised that we were able to fight, we were faster than Williams. We didn’t have the speed to overtake. I was ready to see more tire degradation, but we had good wear. There are many positive aspects from this match and what we paid the most for is the result, because we should have had two more points,” said Stella as quoted by Motorsport Italy. However, just like his outburst, Norris tried to play the entire thing down.

Lando Norris plays down his race-ruining contact with Oscar Piastri

Many, including people in the McLaren camp, might blame Norris for ruining Piastri’s race. However, the Brit is not accepting any responsibility. In fact, he even downplayed the entire scenario despite the reprimand from Stella.

For the contact, Stella said, “There should never ever be contact between two McLaren cars. Which doesn’t fit the go racing at McLaren.”

However, Norris did not see it as big of a deal and was quite relaxed about the contact that did not cause any damage to either car. Norris said, “We respect each other. We give each other space and it’s unfortunate but nothing happened, so it’s OK.”

We are not sure if Piastri shares the same sentiment. Regardless, the team will try to move on from the incident and set their sights on a positive weekend in Singapore.
