

Sony and Microsoft’s rivalry is not a new one. Since the beginning of their venture in the gaming industry, they’ve constantly butted heads. From Xbox‘s deal to take over Activision to Sony PlayStation‘s accessibility controller, this year was pretty much all about Sony and Microsoft. And amidst this ongoing rivalry, a former Xbox executive has shed some light about PlayStation’s superiority.

PlayStation is arguably much more successful, owing to the long list of hugely impressive exclusive titles, among other factors. These include The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Uncharted, and many more. However, former Xbox executive Peter Moore’s statement regarding the rivalry sheds light on just how massive the gap really is.

Moore weighs in on PlayStation vs Xbox
In the context of Microsoft and Sony’s console war, Peter Moore’s comment brought a new aspect to look at. While answering to Iron Lords Podcast, Moore commented that back in old times, Microsoft didn’t have much scope in the console market. As a result, Sony’s PlayStation dominated. Furthermore, Moore spoke about how Microsoft had to travel the world just to meet both the developers and publishers as they were in Moore’s words– “in Sony’s pocket coming out of the Dreamcast falling off.”

Moore explained that Microsoft had to spend millions to ensure that game publishers and developers considered shipping the games on Xbox’s platform, along with PlayStation. In fact, Microsoft also tried to justify Activision Blizzard’s acquisition, stating PlayStation always had a beneficial position to secure games on their platform.

Microsoft’s venture with Ubisoft
Microsoft’s $69 billion deal with Activision Blizzard went through many ups and downs. The acquisition has faced a lot of resistance from the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority. This went to a point where Xbox’s Phil Spencer promised to “continue to ship future versions of Call of Duty on Sony’s PlayStation 5.”

Well, Microsoft since the beginning didn’t express any wish for the title’s exclusivity. However, they collaborated with Ubisoft and gave Ubisoft the rights to Activision Blizzard Games cloud gaming. This collaboration will likely run for fifteen years, provided they successfully acquire Activision.
It will be interesting to see how or if Microsoft’s potential deal helps them bridge the gap in any way. Meanwhile, it is hard to argue with Moore’s point of view with respect to PlayStation’s dominance.
