Muhammad Ali, who is widely considered one of the biggest sports icons across the world was born on January 17, 1942, as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. Though the boxing great is no more alive, the world still remembers him. If the beloved former three-time heavyweight champion was alive, he would have turned 82. His daughter Laila Ali penned an emotional note to mark Ali’s birthday.

The man is considered the greatest the sport has ever seen. He lived his life as a fighter both inside and outside the ring. Folks across all grounds of life remembered his name. To celebrate his legacy, Andre Carson, Congressman from Indiana’s 7th District, re-introduced a legislation to honor him with the congressional Gold Medal.

He shared this information on Twitter. Carson wrote, “82 years ago this week, a legend was born. Muhammad Ali helped our nation grow past Jim Crow and segregation to become a hero, inside and out of the boxing ring. That’s why I am re-introducing legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to honor Mr. Ali and his legacy.”

This award is bestowed by the United States Congress as the gesture of highest appreciation for distinguished service or achievement. No doubt, Carson has chosen the appropriate name. Ali’s service for the society is beyond appreciation. Though he was a master of a violent sport, he always practiced peace and love in his life.

Ali, who was down to earth, was also rebellious in nature. This pushed him into controversies many a times in his life, but he always did what he said he would. He stood up against the irrationality in the society. He took a few radical steps, changed his name, converted into Islam, threw his Olympic Gold in the Ohio river, all while he was in the limelight.
