WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis vs. WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson is a fight that everyone in the combat sports world has been desperately asking for. However, the burning question on everyone’s mind is, will such a matchup ever transpire? Former Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe has shared his thoughts on the question.

Stevenson is about to get back in the ring against Joe Cordina on October 12th at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, having signed with Matchroom Boxing recently. Meanwhile, Davis was supposed to fight Vasyl Lomachenko in a unification bout later this year, but the latter pulled out of the conversation to spend more time with his family. Regardless, speaking to Ellerbe, a reporter from Fight Hype couldn’t help but raise the Davis vs. Stevenson issue.

Gervonta Davis: An uncertain future

During a discussion on the upcoming Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight, set for September 14th in Las Vegas, the reporter turned the conversation to what’s next for the current face of boxing. Ellerbe, who has been beside Davis for a long part of his career, gave a cryptic but promising response: “We going to see. He’s going to let you know.”

Looking ahead for Davis, Ellerbe shared, “There are a few things on the table so we’ll see what happens.” It’s important to mention that Shakur Stevenson has made several attempts to challenge Davis to a fight. However, despite the back-and-forth banter and exchanged insults, these discussions have yet to advance beyond the routine confrontations on social media. This led the reporter to probe Ellerbe further about whether the fans will ever have the pleasure to witness the epic matchup between Davis and Shakur.

Confident about eventually having the fight, Ellerbe responded by saying, “Of course, why not?” Interestingly, there were some discussions about the fight after Lomachenko pulled out not that long ago, but now it seems the potential matchup has been pushed back in the uncertain future. However, the good news is—the head of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, is hopeful the much-talked-about bout will happen sooner or later.

Eddie Hearn on what’s after Cordina for Shakur Stevenson

Eddie Hearn, who recently signed him to his stable, has unveiled ambitious plans for Shakur Stevenson following his bout with Joe Cordina. In a recent interview on Matchroom’s YouTube channel, Hearn outlined his strategy for Stevenson, stating, “For me, what we do is we go Joe Cordina, William Zepeda, Gervonta Davis.” Hearn is confident that a potential clash between Stevenson and Davis will be “the biggest fight in boxing” after a series of planned matchups.

Hearn added, “We’re not chasing ‘Tank.’ We’re chasing greatness, but that comes with ‘Tank’ because he’s an unbelievable fighter.” Beyond the lightweight division, Hearn envisions Stevenson moving to 140 pounds to challenge fighters like Liam Paro and Devin Haney. “Right now the focus is 135 and doing the job against Cordina, doing the job against Zepeda,” Hearn said.

That said, fans will have to wait at least one more year to potentially see Davis and Stevenson duke it out in the ring. While Ellerbe seemed hopeful, he didn’t exactly share any specific details, which suggests Davis’ next fight is still up in the air. What do you think? When will the fight happen?
