Alejandra Ayala is a well-known prospect in the women’s super welterweight division. However, her shocking hospitalization has left boxing fans concerned about her health and well-being. Coming to their aid, she recently addressed fans about her road to recovery.

In a recent interview, ‘Fenix’ mentioned that she found it hard to recognize people once she woke up. She said, “When I woke up, it still took me a long time to even recognize that my parents were there.”

She further added that she found it hard to walk and move. Further, Ayala thanked her fans for their support and also stated that she was happy to be alive as soon as she woke up.

Alejandra Ayala describes her surgery

‘Fenix’ was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, after her injury on May 13th, 2022; She had to have three surgeries performed on her head.

In the interview, Ayala even detailed her painful experiences following the surgeries. She said, “The first one, which happened when I got to the hospital, took the bleeding down. But, then it got worse. They then opened my head and took out half of my skull. And, opened  my stomach and put it in there.”

Notably, the surgeons had done so to preserve the skull in a sterile environment. However, Ayala was unaware that the surgeons had done the same. In fact, she even described the horror of finding out about it. Ayala said, “I didn’t know that when I woke up. I went to the bathroom one day. And finally opened my eyes and started coming to this world. I said, ‘What’s this in my stomach?'”

She also recalled the horror of finding a gaping hole in her head. Ayala revealed that the skull was inside her stomach for two weeks and that a third surgery was required to place it back.

Additionally, she also talked about how it was for her to recognize herself after all the surgeries.

What happened to ‘Fenix’ Ayala?

Ayala faced Hannah Rankin at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow on May 13th, 2022. Rankin successfully defended her WBC and IBO super-welterweight titles against Ayala, who was the challenger.

But, during the fight, Ayala received a few brutal headshots from Rankin before her stoppage win in the 10th round. It was reported that Ayala received treatment inside the ring. But she had to be shifted to the hospital. Moreover, she was even put in a medically induced coma, which lasted for 10 days.
