Despite all the heart-pumping fights that have transpired in the ring over the decades, few never took place. However, that doesn’t stop people from wondering and speculating! A couple of such fights were Roberto Duran vs. Julio Cesar Chavez, or what would have happened if Duran had faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. While it’s hard to predict what would have gone down if the fight happened, ‘El Cholo’ has the answer.

It’s worth mentioning that Duran’s last fight was in July 2001, while Chavez’s last fight was in September 2005. Meanwhile, Floyd last fought in 2017. In an interview with One On One Boxing, the Panamanian boxing legend boldly describes what the end results of the hypothetical fights would have looked like. 

Roberto Duran claims Floyd Mayweather is weak

Duran has fought in 119 bouts during the span of his professional career, winning 103 of them. So, when the host probed Duran about a hypothetical fight with Chavez, ‘El Cholo’ broke into a Spanish song from Oscar D’Leon. He then claimed, “No ways to Duran! Duran had much more experience and still has more than Cesar Chavez… Against Mexicans and Americans. What more can I say?”

On the other hand, Duran broke into a song again when asked about a fight against Floyd Mayweather, a world champion in five different weight classes. He went on to suggest that Floyd Mayweather was weak and didn’t like being hit. “Mayweather is a boxer that’s weak. He doesn’t like being hit to the body. And as soon as he gets hit there, he turns into road runner,” said Duran. While Duran doesn’t think Mayweather could beat him, Mayweather features Duran in his top five best boxers.

Mayweather’s all-time favorites

Back in February this year, Mayweather appeared in an Instagram live with FatJoe, revealing the list of his favorite fighters. He replied, “We’ve got to go Pernell Whitaker. I’mma go Roberto Duran, man you put me in a tight predicament.” Besides Duran, Mayweather named Larry Holmes, praising his skills in the ring and the investments he made that helped him live a great life.

“I’ve got to say, Larry Holmes, he had the basic fundamentals, he had the jab, and even right now he’s still living a great life because he made smart investments.” He further added Aaron Pryor to the list, suggesting Pryor’s only loss came due to his drug issue. “Aaron Pryor, the only reason why Aaron Pryor lost a fight was because of drugs. He lost only one fight because of drugs,” said Mayweather.
