Floyd Mayweather is an enigma no one has yet understood, both inside and outside the ring. Inside the ring, no one was able to penetrate his defense, which was made stronger by his larger-than-life antics outside of it. From odd hours training sessions to chopping wood to maintain his stamina, Money’s preparation methods were as unconventional as they were effective.
It seems like the WWE CCO Triple H witnessed one of those crazy pre-fight rituals when he escorted the boxer to the ring against Juan Manuel Marquez in 2009. Even now, nearly 16 years after that MGM Grand Arena event, Triple H still looks back at the event with awe, a moment where he realized that there is truly no one like Floyd Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather’s strangest pre-fight ritual
Ahead of the WrestleMania weekend, the WWE CCO sat down with Andrew Schulz on the Flagrant podcast. Schulz, a massive boxing fan, looked back at Floyd Mayweather’s brief stint in WWE. Triple H commended Money’s desire to learn, revealing his unique approach towards the match. Recalling the 2009 event, he said, “You know, I walked him to the ring, right? So, for the Marquez fight. It was one of the craziest things ever.”

The 55-year-old shared that, upon arriving at the arena, Floyd Mayweather invited him to the locker room. He expected the boxer to be shadowboxing or drilling. However, what he saw was indeed surprising, as Money was “laying on the couch watching a basketball game,” he recalled.
After the initial greetings, Triple H tried to leave so that Mayweather could warm up, not wanting to be a nuisance and distract him from the fight. However, the former five-division champion eased Triple H’s apprehensions, asking him to stay. “He’s like, ‘If I haven’t done all the s**t I need to do before today, I’ve already lost. I’ve done everything there is to do ain’t nothing going to change it. Now I’m going to put my gloves on a little bit. You sit through the whole thing. I’m going to start to warm up then I’m going to go out there and fight.’ Simple as that,” he revealed.
Well, Floyd Mayweather did exactly that. There was no strategy discussion, no mental preparation, only a normal warm-up. Yet, the 50-0 boxer went ahead and dismantled Marquez to get a unanimous decision victory.

Well, it was not only Mayweather’s unique approach that impressed Triple H. The WWE Hall of Famer also acknowledged his understanding of the business and his storytelling abilities to help sell the fights.
He could make people believe anything
Talking about Money’s time in WWE, The Game noted how he was a natural in storytelling. Schulz believed that it was his ‘Bad Guy’ persona that sold out the fights. He became the ultimate villain, and fans hated him for it. They yearned to see him lose, and that helped fill out the arena. However, it never happened.

Triple H chimed in, claiming that, on top of being hated, Floyd Mayweather’s ability to elevate his opponents was far superior. He used to make fans believe that the next opponent could end his reign. “How many people did he make you believe this is the guy? Yeah, anybody ever, like I brought up the Ortiz? Anybody ever hear that guy prior to that fight?”
Ahead of the Victor Ortiz bout in 2011, The Pretty Boy painted a picture that he was struggling in his personal life through the HBO 24/7 show. Fans started hoping that Ortiz would expose him, only for all those hopes to come crashing down on fight night.
Schulz agreed, looking back at the Canelo Alvarez fight that everyone thought would be the end of Mayweather’s reign. “I mean Canelo, it’s crazy to see what Canelo has done. I was at that Canelo fight, like Canelo didn’t lay a hand on him. It was unbelievable,” Schulz stated. Triple H, agreeing with the assertion, added, “And he made it seem like Canelo is going to kill this guy. And then he walked in there. Like the part when Canelo throws a big wild punch and he over there, ‘See! Who you trying to punch?'”

The duo acknowledged that even though Floyd Mayweather was the best boxer of his generation, his ability to sell the fight made him the biggest. There would be no one like Money Mayweather ever again in the sport, and so far, the statement holds true.
