“I got Calvin tattooed on me. Calvin ain’t going nowhere… Calvin is pops, he ain’t going anywhere,” Gervonta Davis said six weeks before the Lamont Roach fight. However, Ford was nowhere near Tank’s corner when the fight happened. Maybe that absence might have played a major role in Baltimorean’s first non-victory as he fought The Reaper to a majority draw. This is not the first time that there has been a change in Gervonta Davis’ camp. However, he overcame those changes every time with his immense talent and destructive power. But after his first non-result fight, his choices are in question. And as the Lamont Roach rematch is around the corner, he is advised to go back to the basics.

Gervonta Davis needs his team back

Recently, American rapper Gillie Da Kid sat down with Fight Hype for a candid conversation. The Philly songwriter is a huge boxing fan and shares a deep bond with Gervonta Davis. So, as the conversation went forward, the interviewer asked about the upcoming Davis-Roach rematch. The Major Figgas member kept it straight and expressed concerns over Baltimoreans’ lack of direction. He considers moving away from Calvin Ford to be a strange and unnecessary move. “I don’t know what’s going on in Tank’s corner situation. But I’m a big uh guy, that’s what I believe that if something is not broke, you don’t fix it,” he stated.

The rapper recalled his shock when he saw the match to find both Ford and Kenny Ellis not taking the charge. “When I look up in Tank Corner and I don’t see Kenny as the lead. I don’t see Calvin Ford as the lead you feel what I’m saying,” he declared. Without disrespecting Ellis, the rapper claimed that Tank needs to go back to his original squad with Ford as the leader.

He referred to Gervonta Davis as “a person that needs to be pushed.” Without constant motivation, the Marylander can get a little complacent, as we saw against Lamont Roach. He recollected Tank’s fight against Mario Barrios, where Floyd Mayweather’s influence made a difference. “Tank is a person that needs to be pushed, definitely you feel me. Tank was cruising through a fight with Mario Barrios, and then Floyd walked over and said, ‘Yo on the unofficial scorecard, you down.’ That n***a said ‘What I’m down I’m losing? What sometimes you need that definitely for the greatness to come out,’” he reenacted.

Well, it looks like the majority thinks that changing the camp was indeed a derailing decision, and Team Gervonta Davis needs to sort it out as quickly as possible. However, according to Calvin Ford himself, there is nothing to sort out.

Team Gervonta is still strong

Last month, Ford appeared on an interview with Fight Hub TV, revealing that he is still part of Tank’s camp. “I’m still part of it, just from a different perspective!” he revealed. The trainer revealed that nothing has changed, he has just taken a step back. “We ain’t change up anything,” he assured.

The training structure is still the same, and there is no danger of any kind of breakup. After all, you can’t break up a family. “No, he came to see me dead slow down and worrying about you because boom, he knows that I spend time with my amateurs. You know me; both of y’all know me very well. I spend time with my amateurs all the time; that’s my peace,” coach Ford concluded.

Despite not training Gervonta Davis himself, he is confident that the Marylander is great in great hands. Furthermore, being away from each other has allowed them both to appreciate their bond even more.

Well, we might never see Ford and Davis reuniting. However, the coach is still in Tank’s corner and is there every time his student needs him. What do you think? Will we see Gervonta Davis go back to his original squad for the Lamont Roach rematch? Let us know your thoughts down below.
