The Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney situation doesn’t seem to have an end. Now, former professional boxer and WBO super lightweight champion Chris Algieri has shed light on why ‘The Dream’ is facing criticism for his recent actions. You see, in April this year, ‘The Flash’ Garcia defeated Haney in New York.

After the fight, however, it was revealed that the Victorville native had tested positive for the banned substance, Ostarine. It quickly resulted in the New York State Athletic Commission banning the 26-year-old from boxing while fining the boxer $1.2 million. Interestingly, Garcia also came in 3.2 pounds heavier during the weigh-ins and paid $1.5 million to Haney for it.

Regardless, it seemed like the end of the story for the duo, as several months had passed since then. But the former undisputed lightweight champion sued Garcia for the doping allegations, seeking damages for battery, fraud, and unjust enrichment. This led to a hailstorm of criticism towards Haney from the boxing world. 

Meanwhile, Algieri, who was last seen in the ring against Conor Benn in December 2021, suffering a 4th-round knockout loss, has shared his thoughts on the matter. Notably, Benn tested positive for a banned substance the following year. While speaking to Dan Canobbio of PPV[dot]com on Inside Boxing Live, Algieri suggested suing Garcia won’t earn Haney any respect.

“We have been talking about how Devin is getting the brunt of all of this… [It’s] because of this kind of stuff,” he explained. Algieri felt instead of suing Garcia, Haney should have been looking to exact vengeance on his opponent. “We can fight it out. We’re allowed to fight. We’re literally, and we get paid millions of dollars to do it. Go fight, go fight it out,” Algieri continued. 

Interestingly, Algieri is not alone in his opinion about Haney suing Garcia over the fight.

Gervonta Davis’ trainer shares thoughts on the Devin Haney—Ryan Garcia situation

Gervonta Davis’ trainer, Calvin Ford, has strongly criticized Devin Haney for filing a lawsuit against Ryan Garcia. Despite getting his loss turned into a no-contest, and Garcia fined and out of boxing for a year, Haney’s eagerness to sue Garcia didn’t sit well with Gervonta Davis’ trainer Calvin Ford. 

He feels the legal action is unnecessary, saying both fighters had agreed to a mutually binding agreement, and that Haney was already compensated for Garcia’s missing weight. In Ford’s view, the lawsuit is not the appropriate recourse, especially since Garcia has already been suspended and penalized.

“He got paid for Garcia being overweight, and Garcia got suspended, so he’s already been found guilty,” Ford explained on The Rize Podcast. Much like Algieri, Ford thinks the two parties should settle their differences in the ring. 

That said, while Haney is entitled to do whatever he likes—according to law, his lawsuit against Ryan Garcia might just be the final nail in the coffin of his boxing career. Will any good fighter want to face him now? Only time will tell. Until then, share your thoughts on the matter.
