Canelo Alvarez put an end to his historic rivalry against Gennady Golovkin last month after beating him in their trilogy fight. However, many in the boxing world felt that the fight lacked the pace and aggression seen in their previous two fights. The fans expected Alvarez to finish Golovkin, who was way past his prime, while Alvarez has turned into a pound-for-pound great.

Moreover, Saul’s former promoter Oscar De La Hoya also had some insights on the match. The boxing legend recently weighed in on the bout and also revealed the reason Alvarez couldn’t finish ‘GGG’. In an interview with Fight Hype, De La Hoya claimed that the first two fights were more technical than their third bout. He also added that Alvarez looked fatigued as the fight progressed and wasn’t able to increase the intensity. “I don’t know exactly what happened in either guy’s camp. First of all the first and second fights were a lot better, more action, very technical but a lot more action, a lot more conditioning. I don’t know it seemed like if Canelo couldn’t take it to the second gear maybe he was worried about his conditioning.” said De La Hoya.

The former 6-division champion might be on to something as Alvarez did look fatigued in the latter stages. However, this could have also been deliberately done by Alvarez who might be saving his gas tank for the end.

Oscar De La Hoya claims Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin was a fraud

It looks like De La Hoya is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to his former fighter. Following the Golovkin fight, he was quick to call out Alvarez and mock him. In an Instagram story, he claimed that the fight was a ‘fraud’ and that Alvarez’s legacy is nowhere near that of another boxing legend, Bernard Hopkins. “The truth is that everyone is afraid, to tell the truth, the fight was a fraud. GGG is very old and Canelo can’t even hold Hopkins’ jock strap,” said De la Hoya.

Following the fight, Alvarez stated that he had issues with his left hand causing him to approach the fight with caution. Moreover, he did secure the victory over his rival and will now look to get his revenge on Dmitry Bivol.
