In a world full of misfortunes and injustice, one woman stands as a powerful advocate for change. The daughter of legendary and charismatic boxer Muhammad Ali, known for his boxing prowess in the ring, has taken up the charge to call for peace and justice in the country of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Maryum Ali, a comedian and performer, is the eldest daughter of Muhammad Ali, trying to bring atrocities in Congo to light.

Recently, Maryum Ali turned to Instagram, sharing her mission to bring hope and healing to a region gripped by turmoil. According to a report from UNICEF, in 2021 and 2022, DRC ranked highest for violence against children by armed forces and other militant groups. Through her post on social media, Maryum raised her voice against these atrocities committed against cobalt mine workers that mainstream media refuses to cover.

Shedding light on the issue, Maryum wrote, “Oppression, murder, and destruction are not a competition of which lives to value more or less.” She proceeded to reveal something the media was unwilling to cover in the country of Congo. “I want to share info about other issues and places that are not getting news coverage,” wrote Maryum.

She further added that people in the Congo have been facing violence since 1996, which cost approximately 6 million innocent lives. “The DR Congo has been facing armed violence since 1996, with an estimated 6 million people killed,” wrote Maryum. However, deaths aren’t the extent of the result of the ongoing conflict in Congo. Maryum even suggested that over 5.6 million people have been displaced since the conflict began.

Maryum further added that the crisis is made even worse by proxy wars and violence used to exploit the people there. “[DR Congo] has been plagued with proxy wars and violent exploitation,” wrote Ali’s daughter. In addition, the turmoil in Congo is intertwined with its economic, political, and tribal infrastructure.

Later in the message on Instagram, Maryum emphasized the struggles of cobalt mine workers by highlighting the battle for natural resources in the country. She underscored the fact that 70% of the world’s cobalt comes from Congo. However, the people mining those resources never benefit from it. “70% of the world’s cobalt is used in car batteries and tech devices, but the people do not benefit from it,” wrote Maryum. She concluded the message with the fact that most people are unaware of or choose to overlook. “Many live on just $2.00 a day,” wrote Maryum.

With the rampant violence taking over the country of Congo, Maryum has taken up the mantle to shine a light on the matter. However, how much this single post will influence the world is yet to be seen. What are your thoughts on the atrocities carried on in the country of Congo?
