Boxing is one of the most dangerous sports in the world, which can even lead to death if not done under professional guidance. A University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) student sadly lost his life in November last year during a charity boxing bout. Both Nathan Valencia’s family and the institution experienced a huge loss in his tragic demise. Now, more details about the case have emerged.

The fact that not all the fighters were students presented a significant barrier, raising the issue of what group was in charge of overseeing the event. It appears that Kappa Sigma funded the game. Sadly, four days after the contest, the student passed away in the hospital.

As per reports, “After determining that it did, Metro conducted no additional inquiries into the matter. As a result, effervescent evidence was not timely obtained and secured. This evidence includes the boxing gloves used by Mr. Valencia’s opponent, the wraps used by his opponent, or potential evidence of illicit substance use.”

On November 19th, 2021, Valencia faced off against Emmanuel Alman in the duel. The initial investigation was mainly focused on determining whether the event site had a Clark County business license. As a result, no homicide investigation was carried out. But some important new discoveries have been made recently.

New information on the case emerges 

A couple of days after the student’s demise, the police department stated, “Although Mr. Valencia’s death is tragic, the circumstances surrounding his death are not criminal and no charges will be filed.”

It is reported that several safety precautions were overlooked, as the fight was not authorized by USA Boxing or the Nevada Athletic Commission. Prior to the fight, there was no weigh-in, gloves were not inspected, there was no certified referee on site, and there was no medical support.

A chance to learn whether the opponent was using drugs or not was lost because of the investigation’s delay. However, a ruling has now been made that states that battles of this nature should only take place when trained fighters are engaged.

In addition, Valencia’s family has sued the institution, the fraternity, and the volunteer referee for the alleged wrongful death of the 20-year-old student.
