It would take a massive win over a big name for WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis to clear his name after his fight against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. And it appears it’s not Roach’s or even WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. The Baltimore bruiser nearly lost his undefeated record last Saturday night against ‘The Reaper.’

What everyone thought would be a walk in the park for the 30-year-old, turned out to be the toughest fight of his career. Roach went against the grain to match Davis in both skills and power to produce a majority decision draw in New York. However, the fight is marred in controversy, as fans and experts argue Roach had done enough to get his hand raised. 

Not to mention, Davis unexpectedly took a knee during the fight, which is being looked at closely by the NYSC and could overturn the draw in Roach’s favor. Regardless of the outcome, though, everyone collectively wanted a rematch between Davis and Roach. Davis had initially claimed he wanted the rematch. Nevertheless, it won’t be next. 

This later changed to Davis revealing that he would be actively pursuing the fight on social media. However, the latest reports suggest that might not be the case. According to a report from Ring Magazine, Davis’ team is looking to match him against IBF lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko. “A representative for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis reached out to Top Rank after his draw with Lamont Roach Jr to inquire about Vasiliy Lomachenko’s availability for a fight later this year, The Ring has learned,” Ring wrote in an X post.

 Interestingly, the pair was previously in talks for a fight as well.

Before ‘Tank’ settled on facing Roach Jr., he was in serious discussions with Top Rank to fight Vasyl Lomachenko. However, the Ukrainian boxing legend instead chose to retire from the sport to prioritize spending more time with his family. At 37 and having already left his mark on the sport, Lomachenko’s retirement felt like the right time to step away.

However, a retirement was never explicitly announced to the public. Still, popular consensus is that fans may never see ‘Loma’ fight again. This doesn’t mean he is not in fighting shape. After all, he brutalized George Kambosos Jr. in his bout in May last year. Whether he accepts the challenge to fight Davis or not, there’s certainly money on the table, but his decision remains uncertain.

That being said, Gervonta Davis may disappoint fans once again by avoiding a fight against Lamont Roach Jr. However, if the NYSAC gives Roach the win, things may change. Who do you think Davis should fight next?
