Gervonta Davis successfully defending his title isn’t a rare or odd sight in boxing. Most of the time, it is a foregone conclusion, given his talent, skill, and grit. Yet, on March 1, this particular statement felt odd as Tank fought Lamont Roach Jr. to a majority draw, and even that felt generous.

The outcome would have been completely different if Steve Willis had counted Tank taking the knee in the 9th round as a knockdown. Well, that fight is now history, and the duo is looking at the future. And their future shows a rematch where they will settle the score. Unlike their first clash, the air around the rematch is completely different and is being termed as a true 50-50 fight. However, Ben Johnson, a rising welterweight and Roach’s sparring partner, has a completely different perspective.

A rude awakening for Gervonta Davis

A few days ago, Fight Hype got hold of Johnson after his first-round KO victory against Brandon Mendoza. The 20-year-old is a talented southpaw and is one of the biggest talents out of Lamont Roach Sr’s ‘NoXcuse’ boxing promotion. Naturally, Johnson has trained with The Reaper and shares a deep bond with the Roach family. Given the connection, the interviewer pressed him for his prediction on the Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach rematch, and he didn’t hold back.

“I think the look’s going to stay the same. Him(Roach) being, you know, the winner, the better guy looking overall,” he stated. Johnson not only declared his stablemate as the favorite but also dismissed every chance for Tank, which is quite surprising. “I just think it’s going to start a little bit earlier and yeah, it’s just going to be even better than the first one. I picture him(Roach) getting his hand raised,” he declared.

Johnson then shared his frustration over the result of the first match, and he made it known. “I feel like everybody knows or everybody that watched the fight, should know that he won. I feel like Tank; he definitely feels like that, too. He felt it as soon as the people started booing him after you know it was a draw and he started talking and all that,” he stated, claiming that this time there won’t be any debate.

However, his confidence isn’t without its merits. Over the years, Johnson has witnessed Roach’s dedication and talent up close. On March 1, “it was just they see it now and they see what we’ve been seeing,” he concluded.

It seems like the entire Roach camp is brimming with confidence. While Gervonta Davis is laser-focused on redemption, ‘The Reaper’ and his teammates are already looking at the future after the bout. And they have massive plans.

Lamont Roach Jr wants all the titles

In a recent interview with Fight Hype, Roach Sr. opened up about his son’s future. While the final details of the rematch are being finalized, their camp is eyeing another lightweight champion. With Shakur Stevenson and Vasyl Lomachenko bouts being out of proportion, it only leaves them with one option: the newly crowned WBO champion Keyshawn Davis.

“That’d be a great fight too,” Roach Sr. replied when pressed about a potential Keyshawn Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. showdown. “He got the belt at 135, so we want to fight all the best. Keyshawn, right now, is one of the best at 135, so we got to handle our business and he got to handle his business. If it lines up, that’s next,” he stated.

The sight of Keyshawn Davis showing openness to fighting Roach Jr. has further fueled the potential matchup. However, given that both fighters already have different fighters lined up, this fight would have to wait.
