One single match! That’s all it took to turn the lightweight division upside down. The March 1, 2025, bout between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. was expected to be another pushover fight for Tank, being the clear favorite. The Baltimorean was everyone’s ultimate dream in this division. However, as Roach scraped out a well-fought draw, the scenario has now completely changed.
Gervonta Davis is now locked into the rematch, and a loss will challenge his whole legacy. Furthermore, he is not even the top target, as The Reaper has the chance to steal the spot. If that happens, he already has a challenge lined up for him as the newly crowned WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis acknowledged his challenge by declaring his plans.

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr.: a rematch for more than just a win
Earlier this week, in an interview with FightHype TV, Lamont Roach Sr. declared that after Gervonta Davis, the target will be Keyshawn Davis for his WBO title. However, he acknowledged that it would only be possible after defeating Tank in the rematch. On Saturday, Fight Hype’s Ron Goodall caught up with Keyshawn Davis following his press conference at Attucks Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia, where the newly crowned WBO lightweight champion announced his June 7th bout against Edwin De Los Santos. However, a curious Goodall probed Davis about Roach Sr.’s challenge, and surprisingly, the 26-year-old was open to the idea.

“If he beat Tank, I would love to fight Lamont next. Like, if he beat Tank, like literally if he beat Tank, it’s only one fight to make in the lightweight division. Me versus Lamont. like it’s like for real. So, like if you beat Tank, bro, let’s fight,” he stated. However, the Norfolk native clarified that he isn’t disrespecting Gervonta Davis or predicting the fight. He was simply declaring his intention to fight the winner.
Ever the savvy businessman, the 26-year-old recognized the scale of a fight against Lamont Roach Jr. “But hey, s**t since he said something like that, Lamont bro, I would love to fight you. I think you know we will make, you know decent amount of bread. I think it makes sense. If you want to fight me, I want to fight you, bro. Let’s make it happen,” he declared.

If the result goes their way, the Roach camp will be more than happy to make the fight happen. However, the same can’t be said about Gervonta Davis, as he might be targeting the Jake Paul money fight, a move that has been criticized by former world champions.
Tank should follow Keyshawn Davis’ footsteps
In the past few years, a narrative of sidestepping legit opponents has surrounded Gervonta Davis. He is often picking challengers from a lighter weight division or lower rankings, ignoring the likes of Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis, and Vasyl Lomachenko.

On the other hand, Keyshawn Davis, in his fairly young career, has already faced some of the toughest contenders. Furthermore, his upcoming fight against a legit challenger like De Los Santos has garnered praise, including from former two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi and former junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri.
In a recent interview with Fight Hype, Algieri stated, “I love the fact that Keyshawn’s a dog and he’s going after the dangerous guys in the division. De Los Santos is a guy that gives everybody trouble. He’s a very, very dangerous counter-puncher and Keyshawn wants all the smoke. And he’s doing exactly what a champion should do,” praising the high-risk, low-reward nature of the fight.
Malignaggi echoed his opinion before delivering a pointed critique of Gervonta Davis. “I remember all the Tank ballads criticizing Shakur Stevenson for the way he looked against De Los Santos. So I said, ‘Okay, I’ll have Tanks fight him. Let’s see how he looks.’ He [Gervonta Davis] didn’t go near him. It goes to show the character that Keysjawn Davis has as well,” he declared.

Malignaggi further added how Shakur Stevenson and Keyshawn Davis can’t get the “barometer fights”. However, when it comes to Gervonta Davis, “he always avoids it,” he stated. Well, with Davis potentially eyeing a high-profile bout against Jake Paul instead of facing Stevenson or Keyshawn, Malignaggi’s frustration is unlikely to subside.
