On Saturday night, Canelo Alvarez took on Jermell Charlo in a mega fight in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. In a dominant show of performance, Canelo took home the victory effortlessly and defended his undisputed titles. Yet, one particular aspect of the fight raised a lot of eyebrows in the boxing community. What’s that? Charlo’s performance! It was expected to be ‘the’ fight of the year but ended up as a lopsided affair. While appearing in a recent interview, Eddie Hearn shared similar sentiments.

Initially, Jermell’s brother Jermall was going to face Canelo. However, due to personal reasons, Jermall dropped out, handing the baton to Jermell. In the leadup to the fight, experts and fans expressed confidence in Jermell’s chances of beating Canelo. However, their hopes shattered after the two fighters entered the squared ring. In a recent interview with Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn reveals his thoughts on Jermell Charlo’s performance and the possibility of a fight against Terence Crawford.

Eddie Hearn brands the fight “a sparring session”

While speaking to the host of Matchroom Boxing about Jermell vs. Canelo, Eddie Hearn expressed his confusion with Charlo’s performance. “I just don’t know what Charlo was doing,” Hearn told Matchroom Boxing. He asserted, “It looked like a sparring session.” Hearn recalled the statements made by Jermell during the press conference. “I just don’t understand how you can sit at a press conference, ‘My time, legacy, shock the world, show I’m a great,” 

Highlighting Charlo’s remarks, Hearn questioned how Charlo could not even try to win the fight. “then not even – at least if you’re gonna get beat, go out on your shield and get chinned,” Hearn said during the interview. Later, he spoke about the possibility of Charlo facing Crawford. Claiming Charlo vs. Crawford was a big deal before his poor performance, Hearn dismissed the idea. “Who’s rushing to see Jermell Charlo back?” Hearn told the reporter. Hearn ended the discussion with disappointment and remarked, “It was just weird, very poor.”

Terence Crawford on Jermell Charlo

Prior to Jermell’s fight against Canelo, Crawford had shown interest in going up against ‘Iron Man.’ Crawford was in talks to fight a handful of people, including Canelo. But a fight with Charlo seemed like the most probable. However, all that changed after Charlo’s performance against Canelo on Saturday night.

After Terence had witnessed Charlo suffering a devastating loss against Canelo, Crawford took to X (Twitter). In the tweet, Crawford explained that he is no longer interested in fighting ‘Iron Man.’ In a later tweet, Crawford asserted Charlo did not even try to fight and that he should be ashamed of himself.
