‘Match made in heaven,’ they said. Perhaps they were referring to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, a figure more infamous for his mismatched bouts than for his boxing credentials. Just last month, the Ohioan sent shockwaves through the boxing world when he announced that he would clash in an exhibition against 30-year-old Gervonta Davis on November 14 at the Kaseya Center. However, despite being the same age, critics have already slammed the fight.
The matchup, however, sparked controversy because Jake Paul, a cruiserweight, will face the much lighter Gervonta Davis, with a staggering 65-pound weight gap between them. To make matters worse, the height difference amplifies the disparity: at 6’1″, ‘El Gallo De Dorado’ towers over the 5’5″ Davis. Consequently, the pronounced differences have raised eyebrows across the sport, and the Chairman of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission has already branded the bout the “dumbest” fight.

Is the Gervonta Davis vs. Jake Paul fight canceled?
Although Georgia reportedly declined to sanction the fight, Florida has greenlit it. Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis is now set to proceed, with three-minute rounds approved by Bidarian, Paul’s business partner. He confirmed that the Florida Athletic Commission (FAC) accepted these conditions after the promotion abandoned efforts to get the bout cleared in Georgia. Weight remained a key issue due to the disparity between “Tank” Davis and cruiserweight ‘El Gallo De Dorado’.
To level the playing field, the commission capped the maximum at 88 kg—27 kg above Davis’s usual fighting weight. “There will be a victor because the fighters have agreed and the commission has approved a maximum weight of 195lbs for this exhibition,” he said. “When Tank and Jake enter the squared circle to go to battle, they will be wearing 12oz gloves. And both men are enrolled in the highest level of testing with Usada (US Anti-Doping Agency)…”

In early 2025, negotiations revealed that Jake Paul originally targeted Canelo Álvarez for a high-profile bout under the MVP banner, a fight that seemed just a handshake away from finalization. However, Álvarez sidestepped ‘The Problem Child’, signing a four-fight deal with Saudi promoter Turki Alalaksikh for Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season. As a result, Paul turned his attention to Gervonta Davis, and the matchup is now ready to proceed.
Gervonta Davis sets retirement clock ahead of high-profile clash with Paul
“After next year, I’m out of it,” Gervonta Davis declared last year, sending shockwaves through the boxing world. Yet, over time, fans almost seemed to forget the remark. Now, this year, Davis reignited talk of retirement. “I am, in eight weeks,” he confirmed recently when a fan asked about retiring, following his social media rants lamenting how “boxing is dead.” He emphasized that no loyalty remains in the sport. Interestingly, the comments emerged roughly a month before his highly anticipated exhibition bout against Jake Paul, a fight widely labeled one of the most “mismatched” in boxing history.

With the matchup promising a massive payday, Davis revealed his mindset to the public. When asked why he would take such a drastic step despite having several years left in his career, he expressed his aversion to the fight game. So, what does he plan to do instead? “I want to do therapy, right? It would lose the fire that I have inside of me. I want everything out of me, man,” Davis said. “So I don’t never think about fighting again. I don’t think about even getting angry cause I have two girls, two daughters. I want to be living without being seen.”
Now, with the year drawing to a close and his high-profile clash against Jake Paul on the horizon, the question looms: will Gervonta Davis hang up his gloves this year? Critics have already cautioned that taking on ‘El Gallo De Dorado’ could potentially “end” his career. Yet, the fight carries the allure of a massive payday, leaving fans and insiders alike wondering whether ‘Tank’ will step away afterward—or risk it all for one final, headline-grabbing showdown.
