As Jaime Munguia made a sensational statement in the 168 division on Saturday night by defeating John Ryder via ninth-round KO, the top contender in the division, David Benavidez, had a few words for him. The ‘Mexican Monster’ turned to his Instagram story to write, “This a [sic] easy knockout. That’s why they ducked me.” The harsh take immediately garnered public attention.

However, today, the Phoenix native turned to his Instagram story to address his comments again. “[Nowadays] you can’t even say you can knock somebody out cause they say you cocky or talk too much s**t lamao. But you clowns really trying to act like my KO ratio really not 68 percent,” wrote Benavidez.

He further added, “I never disrespected Munguia I think he’s a great fighter and if we ever fight it would be a great fight but I stand by my statement and I know what I can do and I have confidence in my abilities.” Benavidez even goes on to reveal that he was in talks with Munguia for a fight but Munguia declined. “Before I fought Andrade we were in negotiations with Munguia and his team for 2 months back and forth, and then after two weeks of negotiations, they said they didn’t want to take the fight. So what do you guys call that,” wrote Benavidez. While Benavidez claims Munguia doesn’t want to fight him, Munguia has his sights on someone else.

Jaime Munguia wants to fight this 168-pounder instead of David Benavidez

After dominantly defeating England’s Ryder, many would say better than Canelo Alvarez, the Tijuana native is eyeing Canelo as his next opponent. It’s worth mentioning that Canelo is supposed to fight on 4th May for Cinco de Mayo as part of his three-fight deal with Al Haymon’s PBC. So, it’s not entirely farfetched to think a fight is possible.

Meanwhile, after the fight had concluded on Saturday night, Munguia openly expressed his desire to take on his Mexican champion counterpart. “We want the best of the best at 168. We are going to be world champions…It will be a great fight among Mexicans. Canelo gives us the chance. It will be an honor to be in the same ring as him,” said Munguia.
