You never know what life has in store for you. Providence, after all, works in strange ways. And that is nowhere more true than in the case of Nigerian boxing star Efe Ajagba, who never thought he would be a boxer. In fact, ‘The Silent Roller’ was already a soccer player, and quite a good one.

He started playing for a soccer club when he was ten or eleven, starting in 2005. But in 2011, for reasons we don’t know about, he took up boxing. And that has been his vocation ever since. But in this article, we are going to drift away from what the Nigerian does professionally and dive into something more personal. Vocation yes! But one that is laced with roots, origin, and faith. Here is everything we know about Ajagbe’s ethnic and religious background.

Where is Efe Ajagba from? Ethnicity and nationality

Efe Ajagba was born and raised in Nigeria, which does seem to produce some of the best fighters in the world. Although the most populated African nation is under-represented in the sport of boxing (although former unified heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua traces his roots to the country), two of the greatest MMA champions of the recent past, Kamaru Usman (170lbs) and Israel Adesanya (185lbs) were both born in Nigeria.

It is natural that Ajagba proudly represents the flag of Nigeria and has also worn shorts adorned with the Nigerian flag in the past. Coming to this ethnicity, Nigeria, of course, is a very diverse country, made up of over 250 ethnic groups and people speaking over 500 languages. So, what is Ajagba’s ethnicity? Well, the short answer is, we don’t know. We cannot find any definitive source discussing his ethnicity.

But we could maybe narrow down the field since these different ethnic groups (which are colloquially called tribes) usually reside in specific parts of Nigeria. Ajagba is from Ughelli town in the Delta State of Nigeria. The town is one of the twenty-four kingdoms that make up the Urhobo nation, and is mostly populated by the Urhobo tribe. So statistically, Ajagba may be an Urhobo, but again, he just as well may not be, since Ughelli is also populated by people from other tribes.

What’s your perspective on:

Could Efe Ajagba's Nigerian roots be the secret behind his boxing prowess and resilience?

Have an interesting take?

What religion does Efe Ajagba follow?

As far as Efe Ajagba’s religion is concerned, again, we cannot say for sure, but we can hazard another educated guess based upon the limited information we do have. What we do know is that ‘The Silent Roller’ is big on God. If you take a look at his Instagram account, you will see that he is a devout, god-believing man.

His Instagram bio, for instance, begins with the words “God first,” which shows how important faith is to him. Moreover, if you browse his Insta posts, you will find posts about his family where he prays to god to bless them or protect them. In addition, we did find one post of Ajagba, where he has a picture with his wife with the caption: “A wonderful church Service today🙏🏾With My beautiful Wife😘❤️”.

This provides strong evidence that Ajagba may be a Christian. What we can say for sure is that he is some kind of theist, whether of the Christian kind, however, we cannot say with 100% certainty. What do you think about Efe Ajagba’s tribal roots and strong faith in god?
