Mountaineering pioneer George Mallory gets the credit for the famous quote, “Because it is there,” when a reporter quizzed him on a reason for climbing mountains. It sounds like Jiu-Jitsu legend Gordon Ryan inferred his situation to Mallory’s when he met The Mountain Hafthor Bjornsson on the mat.

Finally, The King overcomes The Mountain

Bjornsson, famous for his role as Gregor Clegane or The Mountain in the Game of Thrones, engaged in ground-based grappling. However, his opponent; is a man who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of perfecting Jiu-Jitsu techniques.

Following the initial rolls on the mat, Gordon slithered behind the six feet and nine inches-tall giant. Then, with his hands locked, despite Hafthor’s attempts to disengage himself, Gordon, in what looked like a suplex, rolled over the 335 lbs. colossus.

Clearly, in plain sight, it was game over for The Mountain as Ryan pinned him down on all fours.

The Board of Virtuosos – Gordon Ryan and Hafthor Bjornsson

New Jersey-born Gordon F Ryan III took up grappling when he was fifteen. He received his Black-Belt in 2016. Dismantling renowned names in the field, such as Rustam Chsiev and Keenan Cornelius, during his illustrious journey, in September 2022, Ryan became the first champion in Abu Dhabi Combat Club’s (ADCC) history to win a championship in three separate weight divisions.

Last year, he signed up for a contract with Chatri Sityodtong’s ONE Championship. But a debilitating gastric problem forced him to pull out. In fact, by May 2021, he announced a retirement from all competitive formats.

On the other end, his opponent barely needs an introduction. Hafthor is the only man and perhaps the first to win three major tournaments – Arnold Strongman Classic, Europe’s Strongest Man, and World’s Strongest Man, within a year!

But the character of Ser Gregor Clegane, or The Mountain in George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones, gave worldwide recognition to the Reykjavik native.

It is interesting to see athletes from diverse disciplines come together and test their skills. Besides serving the fun aspect, the convergence is an eye-opener. The strict adherents keen on pushing their craft’s limits and strength finally gets a shot.
