Eleven years after their fight, Floyd Mayweather’s camp still seems to downplay Canelo Alvarez’s potential. Fresh off his victory against Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas, the Mexican superstar delivered a masterclass, securing a unanimous decision win and scoring a knockdown against ‘The Chosen One’ in the third round.

Meanwhile, veteran trainer and Floyd Mayweather’s uncle, Jeff Mayweather, shared his thoughts on Canelo’s performance against Berlanga during a conversation on The Mayweather Channel. However, the real standout moment came when Jeff weighed in on a hypothetical matchup between a prime Floyd and today’s Canelo. And his prediction? Let’s just say it was bold.

Canelo Alvarez: Good but not the best

Speaking to the reporter about Canelo’s last performance, Jeff Mayweather didn’t mince words as he explained his take on ‘Cinnamon,’ claiming while the Mexican superstar did well, he wasn’t as good as he once was. “I mean Canelo’s Canelo. And we’ve seen a little bit of Canelo, [but] not as good as the Canelo we’ve seen in the past. Still Canelo [had] a dominant performance,” Jeff said. Later in the interview, when the reporter probed him about a second fight between Canelo and Mayweather, Jeff claimed the results would be the same as before.

“Yeah, [he has] no chance like he did last time… [He would get] his a** whooped again…  Just like [it] happened the first time,” Jeff told the reporter. This led the reporter to list Canelo’s achievements in the sport, questioning Jeff whether Canelo had passed Floyd in accomplishments in the sport of boxing.

Hearing this, Jeff expressed his disagreement, claiming, “Floyd is the face of boxing too… Floyd fought in many weight classes, too.” Jeff Mayweather remained adamant about it even though Floyd has retired from the sport while Canelo remains active and has fought and won many more fights compared to Floyd. Despite what Jeff says, Canelo Alvarez wants all the smoke.

Canelo wants a rematch with Floyd Mayweather

Canelo Alvarez has expressed a strong desire for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, reflecting on their first encounter as a pivotal moment in his career. In a recent interview with DAZN Boxing, Canelo stated, “Yes, of course. I would love to have the opportunity for revenge. Obviously, we know it’s not going to happen. But yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn.”

The 2013 fight, where Mayweather’s defensive brilliance and counter-punching led to Alvarez’s first professional defeat, is often cited as a turning point in Canelo’s development. Since then, Canelo has evolved into a multi-division world champion, while Mayweather remains one of the greatest technically proficient boxers of all time.

It appears despite numerous achievements, Jeff Mayweather feels Canelo Alvarez wouldn’t have a chance against his nephew Floyd Mayweather. However, that could just be his biased take on the matter. What do you think about the potential fight?
