Back in 2013, when Canelo Alvarez was rising among the ranks, he was handed the first loss of his career by Floyd Mayweather. He was just 23 years old at the time but had a record of 42-0-1 and was touted to be an all-time great.

However, he was outclassed by Mayweather, who won the fight via majority decision. This would turn out to be the last time Alvarez would be defeated in 9 years. He went on a 7-fight winning streak, followed by an 8-fight steak after his draw against Gennady Golovkin, winning titles in 3 divisions.

Alvarez has called out ‘Money’ for a rematch on many occasions. In his latest documentary, ‘The Making of Canelo,’ the Mexican star reflected back on his bout against Mayweather. He stated that he was a completely different fighter from then, with more experience and maturity.

He said, “Simply, it was down to experience. If I compare Canelo with Canelo today, they are completely different. It’d be a completely different fight now.”

Moreover, he also had a stern warning for ‘Money’ and detailed how he would beat him. “If I did this now, I would destroy his shoulders first. It’d be a completely different fight now,” he said, taking shots at Mayweather’s signature shoulder stance.

This is not the first time that Alvarez has commented on a rematch. In an interview with DAZN in 2018, he stated that he wanted to avenge his loss against ‘Money’ and claimed he only won because of his experience. “I think that it’s one of the thorns I want to take out of my side. When I fought against him, I felt I was ready. I felt I could beat him. But experience beat me that night,” said Alvarez.

The Mexican boxer would love a rematch against his rival, however, he has another rival to face next. Alvarez will face Gennady Golovkin for the third time on September 23rd to mark the end of their iconic trilogy.

Moreover, he will look to get back to winning ways after his devastating loss against Dimitri Bivol. Alvarez will be putting his super-middleweight titles on the line against Golovkin, who is reaching the final chapter of his career.
