Former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez left YouTube boxer Jake Paul pulling his hair out after the Mexican superstar backed out of the fight against him. Earlier this month, The Ring reported that Canelo and Terence Crawford were in the final stages of reaching an agreement for a fight in September.
It was later revealed that Canelo is also in talks with Jake Paul for a fight in May. However, this followed the news suggesting the Canelo-Crawford fight was off for good. Many speculated that the Jake Paul bout was the reason behind Canelo-Crawford’s cancellation. In a shocking twist though, ‘Cinnamon’ signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, leaving ‘The Problem Child’ in the dust.
Frustrated with the change in plans, Paul accused Canelo of avoiding a fight against him and called the Mexican superstar a money-hungry “squirrel.” Canelo responded by claiming he only fights real fighters while confirming his new deal with the Saudis. The unified super middleweight champion is currently slated to fight William Scull for an undisputed match in May.

Regardless, a reporter from The Mayweather Channel, speaking to Jeff Mayweather, described Paul’s position as parallel to Canelo Alvarez’s when he fought Floyd Mayweather. The reporter claimed Canelo was an up-and-coming boxer like Jake Paul, and Mayweather was an established boxer like Canelo today. Jeff Mayweather didn’t see it that way “I don’t think so.”, said Jeff Mayweather.
“He has as many fights as Floyd did. But at that time, Floyd was just the best fighter in the world.”, said Floyd Mayweather’s uncle. However, the question now is, are there any parallels between Jake Paul and Canelo when he fought Mayweather?

Canelo Alvarez was levels above what Jake Paul is today
The simple truth is that Canelo Alvarez was leagues above Jake Paul when he fought Floyd Mayweather—lightyears ahead in skill, experience, and accomplishments. Jake Paul has built his record by facing MMA fighters, a 58-year-old boxing legend, and a handful of out-of-prime, unknown opponents. Despite that, he still lost to Tommy Fury—a fighter who, at best, is a D-level boxer, according to many experts in the community.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Jake Paul really in the same league as Canelo, or is this just a publicity stunt?
Have an interesting take?
Canelo, on the other hand, was already the WBC super welterweight champion when he stepped into the ring with Mayweather. His resume included wins over elite names like Austin Trout, Shane Mosley, and Jose Miguel Cotto. Comparing him to Jake Paul isn’t just unfair—it’s an insult to Canelo and the sport of boxing itself.

Sure, Jake Paul has gained popularity and even put together a successful boxing event—but let’s be real, that also because of Mike Tyson. Canelo Alvarez operates on an entirely different level. That said, if Canelo ever decides to step away from boxing, an exhibition fight with Jake Paul could be an interesting spectacle.
It appears Jeff Mayweather doesn’t agree that Jake Paul is in the same position as Canelo Alvarez when he fought Floyd Mayweather. But do you disagree? Let us know in the comments.
