Boxing is a wonderful and truly unpredictable sport. Following his fight against Mike Tyson on November 15 last year, Jake Paul astonished the boxing world by issuing a challenge to Canelo Alvarez. According to The Problem Child, a fight between him and the unified super middleweight champion at “200lb for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight.” He even termed it bigger than his fight against Tyson. Even when the Mexican superstar was asked by TMZ in November, his reply was, “I’m not interested.” While no one, including Canelo Alvarez himself, paid little attention to the callout, it looks like, based on new rumors, the winds may be changing direction.
Notably, Canelo Alvarez is in talks to face Terence Crawford in September 2025. However, he still has a vacant slot for May and is searching for a fight there. Fans expected it to be the IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull, as the Guadalajara native previously avoided fighting him. However, as Scull has started a feud with Edgar Berlanga, that bout seems like a distant possibility.
As the confusion and chaos loomed over, a boxing commentator online Felipe Corral, known for his interviews with boxers in Las Vegas provided a surprising update while simultaneously taking a jibe at the unified super middleweight champion. The boxing insider took to his ‘X’ and reported that Canelo Alvarez might be considering a fight against Jake Paul in May. He wrote, “What was leaked today here in Las Vegas, a personal friend of Canelo’s team. The possibility of Canelo facing Jake Paul in May,” catching everyone off guard. Prominent boxing page @dantheboxingman also picked up the rumor, further putting fuel to the fire.

Corral then took a dig at the Mexican commenting, “Nothing surprises, for many Canelo is not even a boxer anymore,” claiming that at this point the 34-year-old only targets paycheck rather than fight. Coincidentally, while issuing his challenge back in November, Jake Paul claimed that “Canelo needs me,” because of the massive payday. Reportedly, The Problem Child earned $40 million for his bout against Mike Tyson and he can provide even more than that to Canelo.
Jake Paul is not afraid of Canelo Alvarez
Ever since his initial open challenge, Jake Paul has been constantly calling out the Guadalajara native. Recently, he sat down with TMZ Sports, predicting that he will face Canelo Alvarez sooner or later. “Everything I’ve said has come true, so Canelo should be awake, because I’m coming for him,” stated Paul.
The world keeps underestimating him but he has proven them wrong every time and ” the same will happen when I face Canelo.” On the other hand, Canelo Alvarez has been quite critical of what El Gallo has been doing.

A few months ago, the 34-year-old declared the Tyson-Paul bout as more of a spectacle rather than a fight. “It’s not good for boxing. I think Netflix is good for boxing, but especially in that fight. Netflix is doing something wrong there,” stated Canelo before denying any chance of facing Jake Paul.

This is why the floating rumors feel far more surprising and out of nowhere. It looks like the Guadalajara native is targeting a big paycheck ahead of his fight against Terence Crawford. However, given the rigid opinion of Canelo Alvarez regarding Paul’s work, it will be a huge turn.
