Edgar Berlanga’s showdown with Canelo Alvarez was expected to catapult his standing in the super middleweight division. Yet, despite delivering a commendable performance, The Chosen One’s career is at a standstill. Since the bout, he has only stepped inside the squared circle once, that too against an unranked fighter. Granted he knocked his opponent out in the first round.

Despite that, no one could take away from the Puerto Rican’s performance against Cinnamon. It was the high point of his career, something he can always come back to whenever the narrative shifts against him. After all, not everyone gets the privilege to face Canelo Alvarez inside the squared circle. As scrutiny over his career resurfaces, the 27-year-old once more played the Canelo card, firing back at those who discredited his standout performance.

Canelo Alvarez’s punches have no power

Edgar Beralnga recently sat down with Jay Hill and Alex on their latest podcast episode. The trio talked about the 23-1 fighter’s controversial standing in the sport and expectedly, his clash with Canelo Alvarez emerged. Talking about the fight, Berlanga still has qualms with lots of people.

He vented about the commentators, accusing them of favoring the Mexican icon and overlooking his own efforts. “If you look at that fight, they was glazing him, bro. I hit that n***a with a four piece, they don’t say nothing. He hits me with a hook, ‘Oh my God, he hits him with a hook, he’s hurt’. I’m not hurt,” he recounted comically. Berlanga admitted that Canelo does have strong punches, but he was feeling nothing and was taunting him during the fight for that. “I was like, ‘You hit like a b***h. Keep going’,” he revealed.

Berlanga’s bravado aside, the facts tell a different story. He was knocked out in just the third round, a clear sign of punches landing harder than he claims. Undeterred, Edgar Berlanga doubled down, boldly naming himself Canelo’s toughest recent opponent.

He said, “Look at his face compared to all the mother n***s he fought. And when he fight in Vegas, every time, he go to his after-party, always go to his after-party and resort. He didn’t go to his after-party. I went to the club. He was partying crazy after he beat up Munguia,” he bragged, implying he left Canelo rattled.

So, we are just supposed to forget the Guadalajara native’s war against the likes of John Ryder, Gennadiy Golovkin, and Berlanga’s sworn rival Caleb Plant? Not to mention his loss against Dmitry Bivol. On the list of Canelo’s fiercest foes, the Puerto Rican barely cracks the top tier.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Edgar Berlanga really rattle Canelo, or is he just blowing smoke to stay relevant?

The Puerto Rican desperately needs to dial back on trash-talking for a while at least. Instead, focus on getting a fight that can once again skyrocket his standings. However, he recently turned down an opportunity that could have been a prime chance.

Edgar Berlanga: No dice for a Plant fight

Caleb Plant vs. Edgar Berlanga is a fight that every boxing fan wants to witness. And given the animosity between the two, it should not be hard to make that fight. Furthermore, with The Chosen One calling Plant out, it looked like it was only a matter of sending a contract. However, the reality is completely different.

In a recent Instagram live session, Sweethands dropped a bombshell. His team made a genuine effort to make the fight following the callout. “My manager, personally, Luis DeCubas, reached out to Edgar Berlanga’s manager, Keith Connolly, & tried to make a fight for later this summer,” he stated.

However, to his surprise, Edgar Berlanga rejected the fight, completely shutting down the talks. “He turned it down. He didn’t want to(fight),” Plant declared. Since Plant aired this out, Berlanga’s been vocal about plenty, but he’s dodged addressing this claim head-on, something he should do immediately. After all, words won’t elevate his rank—wins will. And one against Plant would surely do it.
