A thrilling boxing weekend is on the horizon, but as always, it comes with a hefty price tag. On May 2nd, Ryan Garcia and Rolando Romero will headline their Times Square Fatal Fury card, followed by the Canelo AlvarezWilliam Scull event just 24 hours later in Riyadh. Fans expected an elevated price for the ‘Fatal Fury’ card, given that it has three solid main event-worthy fights. So, a $59.99 PPV price can be justified to a certain extent.

However, pricing the May 3rd event at the same $59.99 is not sitting right with the fans. Especially when the undercard lacks any kind of firepower. At this point, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh’s words of setting Riyadh Season pay-per-views at a reasonable price are echoing through everyone’s mind—a promise that feels hollow now. To add fuel to the fire, Canelo Alvarez’s outspoken comments about his bout have stirred further controversy for the Saudi Royal, complicating the matter even more.

Canelo Alvarez predicts the outcome

In a recent interview with Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger, Canelo Alvarez predicted that the Scull bout will unfold slowly. He thinks like his recent opponents, the Cuban will also look to survive instead of bringing the fight to him. “First four-five rounds, and then its going to be different,” he stated.

He admitted that for the first few rounds he will asses his opponent and thinks Scull will do the same. “I’m going to start going into the fight. But yeah the first rounds is going to be a little but boring,” he declared.

Well, the declaration hasn’t helped DAZN price the PPV at such a steep rate. Despite boxing insider Jed I. Goodman revealing that the company is offering a combined Fatal Fury & Canelo/Scull PPV for $89.99, it does not make things better. Especially after Cinnamon’s prediction of a lackluster start and an undercard that lacks big names. The pricing feels like a betrayal and further fuels the discontent.

That stings!

A fan commented, “I feel bad for them because they’re just not gonna make great money with these PPVs, it’s that simple,” predicting that setting the price this high will only backfire on DAZN. According to him, fans would remain away from the bundle and would choose either one of the PPVs or might skip it entirely. Another fan echoed the opinion and wrote, “I’m saving 100% by not watching it.”

Another fan wrote, “They might as well have thrown in the Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn Fatal Fury branded card too and made it an even $100 bundle while they were at it. At least getting 3 cards makes it seem like you’re getting some value even though none of these fights are PPV worthy.” According to him, if DAZN had involved the Chris EubankConor Benn April 26 PPV on the same bundle, it might have worked. But as things stand, fans will have to pay $24.99 for that event as well.

The discontent grew larger as another fan commented, “$90+ for tune up fights and guys getting their rounds in.” According to the user, such high prices are not valid, given that the Canelo Alvarez card features no star other than him.

The frustration peaked when a fan highlighted an additional hurdle. He wrote, “You also forgot to mention the 12 month subscription for $200 you can’t get out off 😂,” highlighting the need for an existing DAZN subscription to access all these PPVs.

While the outcry reflects the widespread dissatisfaction with DAZN’s pricing strategy, maybe the fans will come around come matchday. After all, Canelo Alvarez is the biggest attraction, and he doesn’t have many years left inside the squared circle.
