Dorian Yates sheds light on rest between sets

Muscle Mind Media recently posted a video of Dorian Yates speaking about ideal rest time between sets on their YouTube channel. The video was titled “Dorian Yates: How Long Should You Rest Between Sets?” In the video, Dorian Yates said, “The bigger the muscles, the more oxygen required”

He further explained “If you’re working glutes and quads and hamstrings, biggest muscles in the body, you’re gonna use a lot of oxygen, so it’s gonna be a lot of oxygen debt after the set, meaning you have to rest longer on legs than you would on chest or delts or something like that. Back would be a big body part, you might have to rest a bit more there, but legs, definitely the longest rest period.”

Dorian advises listening to your body between sets. If you’re still catching your breath and rushing, you may not be allowing your muscles to recover. He stresses feeling capable of pushing to muscle failure, and not being too out of breath. Since the ideal rest time varies, he encourages trusting your judgment to find what works for you. On Instagram, Dorian Yates shared an old story about when Paul Baxendale used to join him and Kenny for workouts at the Temple Gym.

Dorian Yates High Volume and High-Intensity Training

Yates said that Paul used to follow a training style called High Volume, taught by Johnny Fuller. But when Yates suggested High-Intensity Training (HIT), Paul started seeing better results. That’s what Yates explained and said: “I’ve always had people throughout my career denounce and lambast high-intensity training, nearly always without even trying it!”

At the end of the post, Yates shared that even now, more than 30 years later, Paul still uses just one working set in his workouts. This, according to Yates, is proof that the High-Intensity Training methods they used back then really made sense and worked well for Paul.
