Jeff Nippard questions Sam Sulek’s training

Jeff Nippard recently posted a video on his Instagram account where he not only discusses but defends Sam Sulek’s workout. The caption reads, “Is Sam Sulek’s training dumb? Or smart?”. Nippard wondered if half reps really help build muscles or if doing full reps is better. Surprisingly, Ronnie Coleman also used this method, as Nippard mentions, “It’s not just Sam, Ronnie Coleman did them”. Even Branch Warren, another big name in bodybuilding, used long length partials a lot when training.

According to Nippard, there are five studies comparing half reps to full reps. Four of them said half reps are good, and one said there’s no difference. Per the science-based bodybuilder’s research, none of the studies said full reps are better. Nippard shared that he uses half reps in his own workouts, like pull-downs and leg curls. For him, it’s essential to still control the negative part of the exercise and push hard in the set.

In an earlier study, he referred to steroid use and suggested waiting 8-10 years of regular lifting before even thinking about using them.

Jeff Nippard believes people should have the freedom to do what they want with their bodies, as long as it doesn’t harm others. He suggests it’s wise to reach natural physical limits first before considering other options. Nippard also shared advice on how and when to use certain substances to enhance performance.

In his explanation, Nippard emphasized that spending years training helps athletes understand their bodies better. This knowledge, he says, can give one the confidence to not feel reliant on performance-enhancing substances. Taking this time allows for an informed decision about whether or not to use such substances.
