Ray starts off by talking about how he was a teenager and already getting a lot of attention for his achievements. But even as he was gaining recognition across the states, he was still just a fanboy backstage helping Rich Gaspari with towel pulls and seeing Lee Labrada’s training. Ray humbly claims that he just wanted to learn.?

He said, ?I was a fanboy even though they had predicted I would be in the top 5 the guy that I beat out at the nationals was? Phil Hill and he was I think one place ahead of me like 12th but to be outside the top ten was not only humbling for me its kind of embarrassing.? The 2-time Arnold classic winner also said, ?I?ve got spank** I mean I was up against real men.?

He beat his idols and that was something to be proud of. He beat every competitor he met on stage at least once except Lee Haney and Dorian Yates. The Giant Killer succeeded in his career with a blockbuster story to tell. Ray once talked about Yate?s simplicity as well even when he could not beat him.

Ray once had spoken about Yates and said,??Many of us Californian guys had the nice cars and the dream lifestyle, and here was a guy, even when he was Mr. Olympia, who didn?t seem interested in that stuff.? Adding to this, Ray said, ?He loved Bodybuilding and being the best at what he did.?

Yates remained the paragon of simple life even in the extravaganza of the bodybuilding world. The bodybuilding pro taught a lot to the industry and Shawn Ray as well. Yates saw the gym as his sanctuary.
