Nick Walker is gearing up for his comeback at the New York Pro 2024, and the bodybuilding world is definitely buzzing about it. But it’s not just fans and enthusiasts eagerly awaiting his return; two legends of the sport, Lee Haney and Jay Cutler, have sparked a debate over the future of the Mutant.

After overcoming an acute hamstring injury that kept him out of the 2023 Mr. Olympia, Walker has been relentlessly hitting the gym in preparation for his next challenge. With his sights set on bodybuilding’s biggest prize, securing a spot and winning the coveted title in the 2024 Olympia seems like his ultimate goal. That being said, both Cutler and Haney have their thoughts on Walker’s chances as the marquee event is just months away.

Is size going to help Nick Walker secure a spot at Olympia?

As Walker shares updates on his progress, the bodybuilding community is divided. On one side is Jay Cutler, who sees immense potential in Walker. In a recent post shared by Generation Iron, Cutler expressed his optimism, saying, “Nick Walker is looking really good. I got to see his family. His mom, Tracy, and his father at the event. We have high hopes for him, man. I think he can come in the Olympia and stir it up and possibly win it this year.”

However, not everyone shares Cutler’s sentiment. Echoing this, Lee Haney believes that Walker may not meet the criteria for the coveted title. While acknowledging Walker’s talent, Haney emphasized, “If the requirement for being Mr. Olympia is still the Excalibur of Physiques. Be emphases on IF!!! Nick Walker is not it. Although he is an incredible Professional Bodybuilder.” The debate between them highlighted a crucial aspect of competitions, where many people think that gaining muscles is all you need to win.

However, this is not the case. As many have already explained, while muscle gain is important, so is conditioning and posing. By mastering these aspects, one can defeat competitors who may be taller and more muscular. This happened at the Arnold Classic in Ohio, where Hadi Choopan dethroned Samson Dauda.

Sheer size vs. conditioning

Hadi Choopan stepped up his game at this year’s Arnold Classic, surpassing his previous performance. The Persian Wolf showcased increased muscle density and enhanced conditioning, elevating his overall appearance. Even though he didn’t win over the champ in posing, he still outshined Dauda in many ways.

Despite Dauda’s height advantage and notable progress, it wasn’t sufficient to beat the Arnold Classic debutant. Choopan’s win showcased that in bodybuilding, it is essential to balanced muscle development and aesthetic appeal. These contrasting viewpoints set the stage for a showdown of opinions.

Will Walker’s sheer mass and dedication be enough to propel him to the pinnacle of bodybuilding success? Or will he fall short of the standards set by the likes of eight-time Mr. Olympia? As the New York Pro approaches, all eyes will be on Walker as he aims to silence the skeptics and make his mark on the Olympia stage once again.
