Many individuals might think that those who compete in bodybuilding are always at the peak of their health and push through all the challenges that hit them with ease. Contrary to this belief, five times Mr. Olympia in the Classic Physique category, Chris Bumstead has shed light on how many bodybuilders go through mental health issues themselves.

Bumstead is often known for his transparency regarding everything that happens in his life and the same was seen when he talked about mental health in the sport, during an interview at the 2023 Dubai Muscle Show, hosted by Farooq Siddique. Both bodybuilding enthusiasts delved into a conversation about how he helped many people to overcome their mental struggles.

Chris Bumstead opens up about mental health

In the video, CBum talked about his own struggles with emotions and thoughts he felt during preparation for the Olympia. He emphasized that many bodybuilders are struggling with these problems and that going to the gym often helps them deal with issues like depression and anxiety, or not feeling good about themselves.

He said, “I have these hard times I think those are the most impactful moments for me and I know a lot of pro bodybuilders who are struggling a lot mentally behind the scenes and feel like they’re alone and they can’t share it.” The Canadian Bodybuilder shared that he also faced hard times and he wanted to tell everyone about it, through social media. Furthermore, the host also asked him about how he felt about helping others with their struggles through his social media posts, where he was open about the struggles he faced.

He expressed his gratitude for the positive impact he has on people’s lives beyond just physical inspiration. He recalled moments when fans interacted with him, especially the youth who approached him to share personal notes and their struggles. Earlier, Bumstead had talked about the advice given to him by his therapist.

CBum talks about knowing where to focus

The soon-to-be father had once confessed about how he felt stressed and went to see a therapist. During his session, his therapist said, “You can be the best in the world but that it’s going to take away from others…the optimal business, the optimal relationship.”

He further explained, how one can’t be perfect at everything and that they had to choose where to focus. The 28-year-old said that he used to put all his energy into everything, and it made him extremely stressed.
