One such rising star is Jack Draper, who has been profoundly affected by Murray’s decision to opt out of the men’s singles at Wimbledon this year.

After exiting the cinch Championships at Queen’s Club, Murray underwent an operation on his back, which he said: “wasn’t insignificant.” While the former World No.1 had been trying to compete in both singles and doubles at Wimbledon, it ultimately proved to be difficult. Murray will now turn his attention to doubles only with his brother Jamie. This decision has shocked many in the tennis community, and the latest in the fray is Jack Draper.

Andy Murray’s apparent heir, Jack Draper, emerged victorious over Elias Ymer in a thrilling 5-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Speaking at the post-match interview, he extended his tribute to Andy Murray and was seen singing praises for the legend. Sharing Murray’s role in his life, Draper said, I wouldn’t be here without Andy.” Continuing further, he shared how fun it is to be around the tennis legend. “He is a incredible guy off the court. So funny so gentle, one of the kind.” This, however, is not the first time when the 22-year-old remarked such words for Murray.

In an interview with the Metro, the British player acknowledged that he wishes to play like Murray. “Andy was, and still is, a huge role model,” Draper said. “He is someone I really look up to.” When quizzed if he desires to fill in Andy’s shoes, the star player responded humbly. “I think I’ve got a long way to go until that happens. I will just focus on improving and learning and I am sure at some point in the future, I will give myself a shot.” Meanwhile, the Stuttgart Open winner did not fail to thank the crowd for their support.

Jack Draper’s encounter against Ymer was nothing short of thrilling. In such a scenario as this, the young talent needed some support off the court, and the crowd did not fail to lend to it. The stadium was seen cheering for the budding star with a similar energy as was once seen for Andy Murray. Draper, too, did not fail to acknowledge the same and thanked the crowd for the support.

Speaking at the post-match interview, Draper addressed the crowd humorously. “I know you probably wanted to see Andy out here, but you’re stuck with me instead.” He further shared his excitement of playing in front of a large audience. “You guys were incredible and I love playing in front of loads of people. Honestly, it really helped me out here. There were some nervy moments so I appreciate all the support, it means a lot.”

As the tournament progresses, it will be interesting to see if the 22-year-old can repeat a show of the Stuttgart Open and win something big. As for the 2-time Wimbledon winner Andy Murray, the doubles category is everything to eye at.
