Holger Rune’s journey to the competitive tennis tour was not without challenges. The Danish tennis superstar had insecurities about both his personality and appearance during his childhood, according to his new revelations.

In an honest conversation before the start of his campaign at the Australian Open, Rune made some candid disclosures about being “fat” when he was younger. Reminiscing about the same, the former world No. 4 player revealed he was even afraid to take off his shirt.

Holger Rune recalls insecurities from his younger years

In the recent episode titled Ultra Honest by DR, Holger Rune is self-critical. The young ATP sensation opens up about how he underwent a transformation as he called himself “fat” when he was younger. The Dane went on to disclose that he even didn’t want to take off his shirt in gymnastics for fear of being ridiculed.

The 20-year-old player stated, “Both personality and appearance, when I was younger, because I was fat. I didn’t want to take off the shirt in gymnastics.” Prior to his opening-round match at the start of his campaign at the Australian Open, Rune went unfiltered about the insecurities that scarred his childhood. The Dane is currently competing in an exciting contest against Yoshihito Nishioka at Melbourne Park.

The Danish tennis star got off to a great start to his first-round match against Yoshihito Nishioka, as he won the first set 6-2. However, the Japanese tennis player made a brilliant comeback by winning the second set against Rune, 6-4. The Dane once again turned the match in his favor by prevailing in back-to-back sets of the nail-biting matchup at the Rod Laver Arena.

The 20-year-old player has finally managed to overcome Nishioka in four sets, with a score of  6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. After his stellar win in the opener, Rune will now lock horns with French wildcard Arthur Cazaux in the next round. If he manages to prevail in his second match, the current number 8 player might then face Arthur Fils in the third round, with Hubert Hurkacz potentially awaiting Rune in the round of 16.
