Wertheim probed the Serb: “You understand how extraordinary this is that we talk about in tennis ‘eat what you kill.’ Well, you’re helping the others eat who are the same folks that wanna take food off your table.”

With characteristic humility, Djokovic remarked: “Well, because I have plenty, you know? I have much more than I need.” What makes Djokovic’s stand remarkable is his proactive involvement through the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), co-founded by Djokovic and Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil in 2019. The PTPA stands as a guardian for players’ interests, particularly those dwelling in the lower echelons of the rankings.

These athletes often grapple with the financial constraints inherent in the sport. In a candid admission, Djokovic further stated: “But, women and men who are around 200 and lower ranked in that world, they are struggling a lot. They can’t afford a coach. They can’t afford travels.”

“They skip tournaments. Many of them leave tennis who are super talented and maybe capable of reaching great heights and successes. But they just can’t make it.” Despite this charity, Djokovic still doesn’t have it easy in the circuit.

While his benevolent efforts to support lower-ranked players through the PTPA gained applause, Djokovic’s generosity rarely gets any acknowledgment because of his on-court demeanor.

Despite being a tennis titan, the ATP’s treatment of Djokovic remains contentious. The champ is a formidable force on the court, yet he still faces unwarranted backlash. This highlights a paradox where his on-court triumphs contrast sharply with off-court challenges. 

The Serb extends a helping hand, even if the reception is not always as warm. His commitment to ensuring that promising players receive the support they need extends beyond personal success.
